Welcome back to another episode of God is Better Than Cake, I’m your host, Lottie!
Today I have a special guest joining me again in the studio.
How are you doing, dad?
Good, I guess
Oh no, what’s wrong?
Oh, I’m just tired and stressed, ya know big people problems.
Well, I think you need to hear today’s lesson. Okay?
You know, you’re right. I could use a reminder from the Lord
Have you ever watched a movie and they tell you to follow your heart?
Oh, all the time!
Well, that is really bad advice, do you know why?
No, why?
The Bible says in Jeremiah 17 that
“The heart is deceitful above all things,
and desperately sick;
who can understand it?”
Wow, so why do you think that is?
Well, because sin clouds our judgment and we are often motivated by selfish desires.
Yeah, that’s true so if our hearts are deceitful, who can we follow?
JESUS! He is the way, the truth and the life and no one can come to the Father except through him, that’s from John 14:6.
Wow, that’s really good,
Yeah, I’m so glad we are not left to our own deceitful hearts but that we can follow after someone who loves us and gave his life for us!
Me too! Wow, Lottie, that really helped me today. Thank you!
You’re welcome! Also, did you know that Paul warned Timothy about this way of thinking?
Oh yeah, from his second letter to Timothy. Here let’s read it together.
But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.
Dad, why does he say to avoid such people?
Oh that’s a really good question. So it’s important to remember that he’s not talking about everyone that sins because that would be everyone in the world, but in this verse he’s specifically talking about the people that say they are following Jesus but really they are deceiving and manipulating people. They say one thing but do another and that’s really dangerous.
So is he warning us so that we also don’t become deceived?
Yes, but there is still hope for people like that and we can still pray for them!
Yeah… I bet that they got that way from following their hearts without realizing that it was deceiving them the whole time. Can we pray for those people now?
Yes, what a great idea!
Dear Jesus,
Thank you that you have warned us that our hearts are deceitful and desperately wicked and that following them can be destructive. Lord, so many people listen to the enemy or their own selfish hearts and have become hypocritical. I ask and pray that you would show them their sin, but see that you are even greater than that. Please help them to stop deceiving others and themselves and help them to repent and find true salvation in you. Help us all not to be deceived by our own hearts. In Jesus name, amen
One more thing guys, remember to love God and your mommy and your dad and your brothers and your sisters if you have them.
Thank you for listening to another episode of God is Better Than Cake. Remember to be kind to one another.
Until next time, Ciao
