Is Meekness Weakness?

Welcome back to another episode of God is Better Than Cake, I’m your host, Lottie!

In today’s episode, we’re continuing our series on the beatitudes from Jesus’s sermon on the Mount.

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭5:5‬ says,

“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.”

ESV

Meekness is often misunderstood as weakness, but in biblical terms, it means to be humble before God in submission and usually looks like gentleness on the outside. What Jesus is asking us to do is to exude a humble and gentle spirit, recognizing our dependence on God.

Just as mourning led us to a deeper understanding of our sin, meekness leads us to surrender our pride and submit to God’s will for true joy and gladness. It’s about yielding our strength to God’s authority, trusting in His wisdom rather than our own. He made us and it just makes sense that he knows what’s best for us.

But what does it mean that the meek will inherit the earth? I could go into a long in-depth look at this passage and others like it in the Bible but basically it means the meek will inherit eternal life. When God restores all things, the meek will be a part of his promised inheritance.

Are you holding on to pride or anger? Ask the Lord to give you a spirit of meekness and surrender to him and trust in God’s sovereign plan.

Lord, my listeners and myself to pursue meekness, Help us to recognize our dependence on You, and guide us in humility and gentleness. Thank you for the promise of inheritance in Your kingdom. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Thank you for listening to another episode of God is Better Than Cake. Remember to be kind to one another.

Until next time, Ciao
